Site characterization using estimates of vegetative cover at Chandeleur Island, 2015

Dataset extent

Abstract

To characterize plots as marsh only, mangrove only, or mixed, we employed a simple, effective assessment of percent cover. In each 3m*3m plot, we quantified plant species percent cover in three haphazardly selected 0.25m2 quadrats. For abiotic data, please reference the dataset R4.x262.212:0001, The effects of oiling on salt marsh and mangrove macrofauna communities at the Chandeleur Islands, LA (June and September 2015) located at https://data.gulfresearchinitiative.org/data/R4.x262.212:0001 (Macrofauna_abiotics_ChandeleurIsland_2015.csv).

Purpose

Assessments of percent vegetation cover offer simple and accurate characterizations of relative species composition. This method was used to ensure that vegetation composition at selected treatment plots was commensurate with levels as outlined in the proposal.
