Executive Summary

This Phase I report describes the development, calibration, and application of a numerical model to simulate hydrodynamic and sediment transport processes at Perdido Pass and the Lower Perdido Bay in the City of Orange Beach, AL, using the Delft3D modeling suite. The model was developed to describe the tide- and wave-driven flows, sediment transport patterns and morphological changes to support an evaluation of the beneficial uses of dredged sediments in the study area. The work also provides a means of evaluating the potential protection and restoration of the Lower Perdido Islands, located in the flood shoal of Perdido Pass in Bayou St. John (see Figure EX-1). Olsen Associates, Inc., as subconsultant, teamed with Moffat and Nichol, Inc., as prime consultant, to perform several studies for the City of Orange Beach, AL, in conjunction with a RESTORE Act grant from the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR).

The model was developed to describe these tide- and wave-driven processes to support an evaluation of the beneficial uses of dredged sediments in the study area and to provide a means of evaluating options for the potential protection and restoration of the Lower Perdido Islands (LPI), located in the flood shoal of Perdido Pass in Bayou St. John (see Figure EX-1). Olsen Associates, Inc., as subconsultant, teamed with Moffatt and Nichol, Inc., as prime consultant, to perform several studies for the City of Orange Beach, AL, in conjunction with a RESTORE Act grant from the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR). Moffatt and Nichol, Inc., has been contracted by the City of Orange Beach for Natural Resources Consulting and Engineering Services (City Resolutions 20-088 and 20-089).
